Jukkasjärvi Icehotel December 10, -21 degrees

The sea leaves are finally taking shape!

After we marked the position of the pillars on the floor we have located the exact spot where they are supposed to meet the roof.

We are building the pillars using big ice blocks measuring 50x30 and the surfaces need to be leveled before we "glue" them together. It´s interesting how water can be used to connect ice blocks in such a resistent way.

Tomorrow we are going to set the last blocks which are supposed to extend up trough the roof.

Today is the first day for tourists to enjoy Icehotel and some final retouches are required before the opening ceremony of the Icebar.

The Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi is situated above the Arctic Circle. Here, as in all polar regions, the sun is not visible above the horizon for a period that goes from the beginning of December until mid January.
This season in Lapland is simply breathtaking: fairy-tale snow landscape and a particular daylight resembling a long sunset.

Today we used a pressure watergun to glaze the rough pattern we digged yesterday all along the roof in our Icehotel Suite.

The water, freezing immediately, left the surface very shiny and wet-like. The underwater ice effect we are trying to create will look marvelous with the illumination we planned with the Lighting Team.

We also completed the smoothing on the walls and set the ice pillars in position. Tomorrow will be a very hard day: heavy blocks to lift, holes to dig and more sculpturing...

The Icehotel continues to grow, day by day, all winter.

Today in our Icehotel Suite we kept on polishing the walls and rounding the edges, it´s a hard job but is going to look awesome after the lighting is ready.
In the scene represented our Suite, the ceiling is a glimmering ice surface at the top of a frozen lake, to create this effect we digged out a rough pattern all along the arch.

- 8 days to go!

Today we worked sculpturing more on the fish, trying to get the right movement and volume. The yellow dots is the marks left by the rebars we are placing inside the body of the fish, this should make the whole structure more resilient.
Tomorrow we are going to make "snice", the perfect combination of snow and water, to cover the holes and polish the surface.

Hard day today, time to get some rest.

The work on the fish is ongoing. We placed a new, big block of snow in front of the fish so we can make it bigger, it took three people to get the block properly setted on place!

Alessandro, the fish sculptor of the day

Work in progress everywhere...

Lot of work today in spite of the fact it´s Sunday. Icehotel never sleeps but that´s fine, Rome wasn´t built in a day after all.
We met the Lighting Team to discuss about the illumination in the Suite, the challenge is to create an underwater feeling since the scene takes place on the bottom of a frozen lake. The whole room will be draped in a deep-blue light with the only source of daylight coming straight from the hole in the roof.

To create this particular effect we have to make the walls very smooth and round all the corners.

The fish is also on its way out of the huge snow block inside our room. Snow and Ice are such a lovely materials with different properties and textures but it feels they carry the same Soul.

See you tomorrow.

Day six

This Saturday all the Artists had a day off from the work in the Art Suites, with different activities organized by Icehotel. Among the many interesting things to chose from, we decided to go with reindeer sleigh and driving snow-mobiles at the Torne River.
We had a lovely day, a little break to recharge body and soul.

In the meanwhile the Icehotel keeps on growing...
